Athletic Training Services
Cayuga Medical Center has five certified athletic trainers (ATC) on staff. They are skilled professionals who specialize in athletic health care and work closely with physicians and other allied health personnel as integral members of the sports medicine team.

Cayuga Medical Center's certified athletic trainers work on site at area high schools, colleges, and with club teams, as well as in the sports medicine clinic at the Island Health Center and in the Athletic Performance Center on Brentwood Drive.

Sports Medicine Clinic
Our physicians are experts in musculoskeletal and medical sports conditions and they understand what drives athletes. They will help you recover from injury as quickly and safely as possible and get back in the game!

Sports Concussion Management

Concussions occur when a blow to the head or neck interrupts brain function. The effects of these concussions vary among individuals, and many mild concussions are undiagnosed and unreported. Most athletes recover completely and can return to play following an appropriate period of recovery. However, it is important to understand that suffering a second blow to the head while recovering from an initial concussion can have catastrophic consequences, including death. Knowing when it is safe to return to play in order to avoid serious brain injury is crucial.

Sports Physical Therapy
Our primary goal in sports medicine is to help athletes return to play at a level equal to or greater than their performance prior to injury.

The most important factor in recovering from an athletic injury is early intervention. We strive to see athletes who have suffered an acute injury as quickly as possible. Managing inflammation and swelling is essential to prevent muscle atrophy, loss of range of motion, and neuromuscular dysfunction.

The modalities we use in this early phase of treatment to reduce acute inflammation and swelling includes electrical stimulation, intermittent compression, and ice. Exercise for range of motion, strengthening, and proprioception begin early in the rehabilitation program.

As injured athletes start to regain normal function, they begin sport-specific activities. Sub-acute and chronic injuries require a comprehensive evaluation of joint mechanics, soft tissue mobility, muscle flexibility and strength, proprioception, and neuromuscular control.

Athletic Performance

Whether you are an elite athlete, a weekend warrior, or someone who is striving to be fit, our team of athletic performance specialists can help you achieve your goals.

Sports Nutrition

With proper nutrition you can achieve a higher level of performance. Our certified specialist in sports dietetics helps athletes and other active people reach optimal performance by moving them beyond nutrition basics.

Sports Massage
Consider sports massage as part of your healing process. We find that massage assists with injury recovery, increased range of motion, increased circulation, removal of waste products, decreased soreness, decreased tightness, increased flexibility, and more.

Our licensed massage therapist uses a style of massage that combines deep tissue, Swedish, trigger point, and movement in a soothing, integrated flow. Because she is also a certified personal trainer, she is able to offer an informed perspective on muscle imbalances and how they can be addressed through massage.
